Strengthen your immune system with a healthy diet

Written by Boogie | 04/21/21

For many of us, life has become more sedentary recently. The confinement has deprived us of our usual daily activities: shopping, going to and from the office, or going for long walks. These activities have been replaced by another: we increasingly go to the kitchen to grab something to eat.

It must be admitted that the urge to snack can be triggered by stress. Some psychologists explain this phenomenon by the fact that confinement is an unstable situation that strongly affects our mental well-being. This is why we are sometimes inclined to nibble on something we like from time to time. And more often than not, these foods contain a lot of sugar.

1) Break the vicious circle

There are already several methods to stop you from regularly going to the kitchen. The classic method: eat well during meals. But be careful, this does not mean eating a lot. The principle is to include three main elements in your meal: vegetables which should occupy ½ of your plate, ¼ of the carbohydrate - pasta or rice, and the last ¼ of your dish remains for proteins - meat, fish or other.

The second method: try not to buy foods containing quick sugars like cakes, cookies and industrial dishes. Although they are quite heavy, they are digested very quickly by our body, and the feeling of hunger will return immediately.

The third tip: don't forget to drink a glass of water 15 minutes before your meal. Your stomach will already be a little full and you won't feel as hungry.

Finally, try to listen to your body: eat slowly and only when you really want to, avoid overeating. All these tips will help you normalise your digestion and your well-being.

2) Prepare drinks to strengthen your immunity

It is very important to hydrate regularly. The golden rule of 2 litres a day is more relevant than ever. But for some of us drinking only water is a good challenge, and in this case there is a solution. Traditional medicine has some great recipes for feeling better. Boogie has come up with a few dried fruit and herb mixes to vary your tea-water-coffee routine:

- Rosehip and dried apricot drink (whole): add both to 2 litres of hot water and leave to infuse for about 7 hours.

- Berry compote: add cranberries, blackcurrants, viburnum, cherries and strawberries to 1.5 - 2 litres of boiling water and cook for up to 10 minutes. You can add two spoons of honey.

- Vary your teas with herbal teas: mint, thyme, chamomile and many others will help you to calm down and keep your spirits up.

- And the simplest solution: the ginger-honey-lemon drink has proven its antiviral and anti-inflammatory effectiveness. What's more, this magic potion helps to ease our digestion.

3) Vary your diet

At least 5 portions of fresh fruit and/or vegetables of different colours per day is an essential rule to maintain your health. The colours of plants reflect the presence of pigments - bioactive substances that have an antioxidant effect. The study by L. M. Oude Griep proves that daily consumption of fruit and vegetables, especially of light colours, reduces the risk of stroke. Boogie recommends supplementing your diet with at least 1-2 apples or pears a day, foods containing polyphenols (nuts, propolis, plums, cherries etc.) and foods containing quercetin (red grapes, garlic, broccoli, green beans).

Don't forget to enrich your diet with a variety of proteins: they can be of plant and/or animal origin. However, Boogie advises you to reduce the consumption of red meat to a maximum of once a week and prefer other alternatives. If you eat fish, aim for about 2 portions per week. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, make sure you vary the type of protein source that contains enough amino acids.

4) Say STOP to alcohol, sugar, salt and junk food

Boogie hopes you already know that all of these things are bad addictions. And since all bad addictions leave a mark on our health and lower our immunity, they should be excluded from our daily life.
